History of Gerding Ditching (1911)
With Northwest Ohio being a swamp, early settlers had to figure out an effective way to drain water off their lands to grow their crops. In 1911 Henry Gerding started ditching, or draining water, for other land owners by hand using only a spade to install clay tile. In 1920 he purchased his first steam powered wheel machine and set in to motion a family business that would endure generations. Through the generations; Henry Gerding, our founder, his son Felix “Pete” Gerding, and his grandson Bill Gerding have all played a vital role to the expertise and the care we approach each job.
